Quick verdict

Choose OmniNVR when you already own suitable Apple hardware, have a small number of cameras, and want to start without purchasing a NAS or per-device licenses. Choose Surveillance Station when a Synology NAS is already the always-on storage center or when centralized camera management and large disk pools justify dedicated hardware.

Advanced Synology analytics such as certain people/vehicle, face, plate, and counting tasks depend heavily on DVA hardware and model limits. Do not assume every ordinary DiskStation provides the full DVA feature set.

Where OmniNVR saves infrastructure

A NAS is valuable when it already serves backup and file-storage roles. It is less attractive when purchased only to record two or three cameras. OmniNVR can use existing Apple hardware and external storage, reducing the number of platforms a small site must administer.

The native Apple workflow also avoids switching between DSM package management, browser consoles, DS cam, and separate display hardware for ordinary monitoring.

Where Synology is stronger

Surveillance Station is the better tool for a central storage appliance with large drive capacity, long retention, broad certified-camera coverage, rule-based recording, multi-camera management, and NAS-centric backup or archive. DS cam provides iOS and Android live view, playback, timeline, and notifications.

Synology also offers purpose-built NVR/DVA and display products. That is a more complete appliance ecosystem than a focused Apple app when the installation calls for it.

Licenses and AI hardware

Many Synology NAS models include a small number of device licenses, with additional cameras requiring permanent device licenses. Included counts vary by hardware. Advanced Deep Video Analytics tasks are largely tied to DVA models and have model-specific task limits.

Compare total acquisition cost: NAS/DVA chassis, drives, UPS, expansion camera licenses, and display endpoint versus Apple hardware and storage already owned. Verify regional license pricing with Synology or a reseller.

Which should you choose?

Choose OmniNVR when you want local Apple camera recording without buying a NAS. Choose Surveillance Station when a Synology NAS is already central to the site or dedicated storage, licensing, and appliance management are desired.

Frequently asked questions

Does Synology include camera licenses?

Many Synology NAS products include two device licenses, while some NVR/DVA models include more. The exact included count and expansion rules depend on the hardware and current Synology policy.

Can an unlisted camera work with Synology?

Potentially. Synology documents ONVIF, Generic, and user-defined RTSP setup for cameras outside its compatibility list, but feature depth can be lower than for tested models.

Does Synology have an Apple TV app?

Synology's documented client set emphasizes browser/desktop clients, DS cam mobile, VisualStation and selected Local Display hardware. Verify the current app catalog if native tvOS is a deciding requirement.
